What could be more appropriate than following up a chick flick like Eat Pray Love with a trip down memory lane accompanying your favorite action figures—oops, that’s “heroes.” The Expendables is this throwback to golden oldies like The Dirty Dozen and The Magnificent Seven. Sylvester “Rocky” Stallone leads a flock of highly decorated (that’s tattoos, not medals) bikers against a South American tyrant. No quarrel with that. Nor with Jet Li, Dolph Lundgrund, and Jason Statham doing their thing, i.e., inflicting mayhem on bad guys, or bad guy, played by eating, praying, and loving Julia Roberts’ brother, Eric. Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, and even the Governor of California show up for cameos. This is a film was guaranteed to make critics cringe, but that didn’t stop audiences, including women, from shelling out for tickets. And actually, even The New York Times liked it, sort of. As A.O. Scott put it, “It’s better-than-average Stallone. I can’t quite say that it’s not bad: it is bad! But not entirely in a bad way.” In other words, its a “good, bad movie.”
